Decisive Win by Hickleton

Turner Bowls Well

Thorncliffe  45                           Hickleton  50 for 6

A Turner 6-26                               H Adams 5-25

Hickleton, who are relying mainly upon last season’s players, opened their programme in convincing style by a win over Thorncliffe, but Saturday’s play should not be taken as a true criterion of either side’s ability as the wicket was “tricky,” undoubtedly rendering great assistance to the slow bowlers.

Although Hickleton won by the comfortable margin of six wickets their victory was even more pronounced as, following Thorncliffe’s sorry display.  Alban Turner varied the batting order to a considerable extent and we saw the unusual occurrence of Arthur Senior and the captain together as the sixth wicket pair. Turner’s policy in sending in Silverwood and Cyril Probert early on, was apparently in order to knock the runs off as quickly as possible, but these, and that succeeding batsmen were never comfortable when facing Adams, who exploited the wicket to the full.  Previously Turner had bowled equally well for Hickleton and Thorncliffe would have been out much sooner if Reg. Probert had been brought on earlier at the other end.

As usual, Turner opened the attack with Cyril Probert but it seemed hardly the correct policy to keep him on for nine overs, as the wicket “killed” his fast deliveries before they became dangerous.  The batsmen, however, treated his bowling with more respect than it merited and only 10 runs were hit off his 54 deliveries.  Facing Turner and Reg. Probert the batsmen became even more cautious and this led to their undoing.  Turner clean bowled four of them, caught another off his own bowling and got a sixth when Senior made a simple catch in the slips. He bowled throughout the innings which occupied about an hour and a half and his six wickets cost 26 runs. Reg. Probert sent down only overs, three of which were maidens and got three wickets for two runs each, Baxter’s 23 was the only double figure contribution to Thorncliffe’s total, no other player scoring more than four, while Bennett, Overton and Turner each got 11 for Hickleton.  Adams secured five of the six wickets that fell for 29 runs.
