A well-known Thurnscoe student, Raymond Peter Jones, son of Mr and Mrs. D. Jones, of 6, Park Road, Thurnscoe, has gained the distinction of obtaining a State Scholarship.
Peter is 18 ½ and was educated first at Thurnscoe Junior School winning a County Minor Scholarship in 1943 to Wath Grammar School. He gained his School Certificate in 1949 and while in the sixth form played with the School Rugby fifteen, was captain of the cricket eleven and also editor of the school magazine.
In the summer of this year he took his Higher School Certificate and was offered the choice of a County Major, or a State Scholarship. Peter chose the latter and is going up to Manchester University to study in the English Honours School. In gaining his Higher School Certificate he had Distinctions in English and History.
Peter is following in his father’s footsteps. His father was a teacher in the district up to six years ago when he left to teach in Barnsley. At present he is deputy Headmaster at the largest school in Barnsley, the Littleworth Junior School.
