Thurnscoe’s oldest working men’s club is now its newest, and Thurnscoe people are responding with a rush in membership.
Thurnscoe working men’s club was formed in 1890s in a Butcher Street loft. In August 16, 1967 they moved into brand-new modern premises on high Street.
Already the 600 membership has grown to almost 1000 and the committee feel that they may have to set an upper limit in the near future.
Already crash plans for an extra outbuilding have been drawn up, as there is not enough room in the club to store crates and empties!
Sec of 20 years standing, Mr George Crowe told the “South Yorkshire Times” this week, “At present, we are having to store empties in the space set aside for the snack bar which we ought to start shortly.”
The decor of the club is on the theme of a ship – with “S.S. Thurnscoe” painted on the prow -shaped lounge bar.
To find the tolerance, you must be sharp minded enough to grasp the meaning of “wrens” and “ratings,” while the prospective new member seeking for the secretary will be directed to the “Captain’s cabin.”
“I am beginning to wonder,” said Mr Crowe, “if they will ever stop ribbing me about the “Crow’s Nest” in the concert room!”
A section of the concert room showing the excellent stage at Thurnscoe High Street WMC, officially opened on Wednesday.
