Christmas Fair.
Thurnscoe Church Bazaar.
The members of St. Helen’s Church, Thurnscoe held a Christman “Fayre” in the Sunday School on Monday afternoon. This is the first time that such an event has been organised in Thurnscoe and a great deal of work mid forethought had been given to the arrangements.
The stalls were gaily decked with seasonable merchandise, and the hall presented an animated appearance. There was no formal opening, the business of selling commencing quietly at three o’clock, and continuing steadily, if rather slowly, throughout the afternoon. The attendance was not so good as might have been expected, probably owing to the near approach of Christmas and the prevailing poverty.
The goods provided were very varied in character and attractive in appearance and price. Over 1000 toys, books and novelties had been included, and a real innovation was the “Pets’ corner,” where goldfish, singing birds, and rabbits were being offered for sale.
The Work Party were responsible for a useful drapery stall, the Mothers Union for a “Give and Get” effort, and the G.F.S. and C.L.B. each contributed there quota to a most original effort.
A small sum was charged for admission, and each visitor was then invited to enter the “Magic Grotto” and receive a present front Santa Claus (ably played by Mr. E. Dolby), and his attendant fairy (Elsie Oades).
Music was provided during the afternoon by means of a gramophone, and there were a number of small sideshows.
