Thurnscoe Tenants “Flit”
Two former tenants of Mr GP Chapman of Thurnscoe, were summoned at Doncaster on Tuesday for having fraudulently removed goods from the houses they have occupied.
Mr Frank Allen prosecuted, and the defendants are Mr Albert Hartley, now living at Thorne, and William Henry Doherty, now living at Goldthorpe.
Mr Allen said Hartly had promised to pay off the arrears of rent, which amounted to £12 7s at the rate of five shillings a week. His goods were valued at £20, and’s he was now working at Thorne Colliery. The magistrates made an order for the payment of 10 shillings a week.
Doherty arrears amounted to £2 17s 3d and his goods were worth £5. Mrs Doherty said her husband had received a lump sum for compensation, and with the money he bought in motor lorry. He did not insure it, however, and the engine blew up. He was at present working on “the building,” but could not work regularly because he was a cripple. An order for the payment of 2s 6d a week was made.
