Thurnscoe Urban Councillor

The death occurred on February 13 at his home in Merrill Road, Thurnscoe, of Mr James Ambrose Yardley (71) who, was, 17 years ago a member of the old Thurnscoe Urban Council.

He was also one of the Yorkshire and North Derbyshire representatives on the General Council of the National Union of General Municipal workers and joined the National Amalgamated Union of labour, number 127 Branch (Hickleton Main) in 1906.

A 1907, he was elected to the branch committee, and became auditor in the same year. In August 2009, he became secretary of the branch – a position which he held without opposition until he was appointed full-time Branch Secretary in 1935.

He became a member of Thurnscoe UDC in 1930, and remained on the council for seven years.
