Thurnscoe’s Music Festival
The success of Saturday’s music festival was a further tribute to the work of the Society’s Secretary, Mr. C. Fretwell.
Mr. Fretwell has been associated with Thurnscoe since 1919. The old Male Voice Choir, which was disbanded in 1922, had his services for a short time, as assistant secretary, and also as a baritone singing member. He was a member of the famous quartet which during six or seven years, won many outstanding successes in different parts of the country. Mr. Fretwell has recently resigned secretary-ship of the Harmonic Male Voice Choir, a position which he held since its inception in 1924.
The Musical Festival Society was formed in 1930, running its first festival in 1931, and thanks to the enterprise of its secretary, has established itself as one of South Yorkshire’s most prominent musical functions. While Mr. Fretwell was with the Harmonic Choir it was placed in the first three in forty of the forty-seven competitions in which it competed. Its successes include nineteen first-class awards and thirteen seconds.
Mr. Fretwell is a native of Chesterfield. He served four years during the war. He has taken a keen interest in sport and is at present a vice-president of the Hickleton Cricket Club.
