Took Part in S.E.A.T.O. Exercise
Aircraft from major nations which keep a watchful eye on the seas in Far East recently combined in the Philippines tour take part in a South East Asia Treaty Organisation exercise involving a fleet of more than 36 ships from six member countries.
From the Royal Air Force there were four-engined Shackleton’s on detachment from RAF Changi, Singapore, some 3000 miles away across the South China Sea; from the United States and New Zealand, Orions and from Australia Neptunes.
In their off duty Times, the British airmen were able to see the sights of the Philippines, some of them travelling north to the remote villages where the inhabitants carve the wooden products for which their country is famous, perhaps shooting the rapids at picturesque Pagsanjan Falls, or riding one of the hundreds of multicoloured decorated jeepneys (cheap taxis) which rove the streets of Manila and its suburbs.
One of the men with 205 Squadron who took part in exercise was junior technician Peter Boone (22) who is an airframe fitter. Peter has been in the RAF for seven years and in Singapore a year.
His parents live at The Hall, Thurnscoe.
