Two Thurnscoe Boys are County Boxing Champions

Two 18 years old Thurnscoe boxers, Colin Marsden of 15 Saint Peter’s Gate, and Doug Carter of 8 Tudor Street, each won county championship in their own weight class – welter and light welter respectively – while boxing for Hickleton A Youth Club in the Yorkshire Association of Boys Clubs championships at Leeds on Monday.

Marsden, (left) who works at Highgate Colliery, became Hickleton Main Youth Club’s first National Association of Boys’ Clubs champion two years ago after four years’ boxing experience with the club.

Three years before that, Harry Carter (Doug Carter’s elder brother) unsuccessfully contested the National championships while boxing for Hickleton.

In his bout on Monday, Marsden who was also county champion in 1957, beat G. Hodgson of the Jo Walton Boys’ Club, Middlesbrough.
