War Memorial Hubbub
Regrettable Incident’s at a Thurnscoe Meeting.
There was an acrimonious discussion at public meeting held at Thurnscoe to consider the recommendation of the War Memorial Committee that a monument be erected in the recreation ground.
The suggestion met with strong opposition from ex-soldiers present, who complained that their wish that the fund should distributed for the benefit of the widows and children of service men had been rejected without proper consideration being given to it.
Mr. Mark Nokes, J.P., who presided, slated that the proposal of the ex-Service men had been seriously considered, but a committee majority had favoured the scheme now submitted.
At times the discussion grew so warm that speech-making was impossible, and Councillor Hoggard and others appealed vainly for order, pleading that the sacred business should conducted in an orderly manner. Ultimately, after the ex-soldiers had made it clear that their opposition was based solely on the belief that their-own proposal had received very curt treatment, the War Memorial Committees scheme was adopted with only five dissentients
