Watered Milk
Thurnscoe Farmer Fined
A Stotfold (Thurnscoe) farmer, Luther Hartley was yesterday, Doncaster Borough Police Court, fined £10 for selling adulterated milk, and also ordered to pay £9 10s 6d. costs.
Milk delivered at local milk dealer’s premises, was taken for analysis. One sample was found to contain 18.7 per cent, of added water and another 36.9 per cent of added water. Milk taken from defendants cows was found to genuine.
The case, said Mr. F. L. Croft, prosecuting, imperilled the credit of the dealer who received from the defendant, and also the credit of other dealers through whose hands the milk passed.
Hartley pleaded that In ordinary times he had sufficient milk to supply his customers, but this time had not and he therefore purchased additional supplies from other sources. He contended that the milk taken from the churns found to genuine was his milk and that the’other two in respect of which had been summoned, contained milk he had bought mixed with his own.
