A wedding of interest to many residents in the Wath, Dearne and Mexborough district was solemnised on Boxing Day at St Helens Church Thurnscoe, between Miss Louise Catherine Clark, only daughter of Mr and Mrs William Clark, “Caprino,” Sherwood Avenue, Scawsby, Doncaster and Mr Charles Jackson Smith, second son of Mr and Mrs Charles Smith, of “Merok,” West Melton.
The bride, a former pupil of Wath Grammar School, is well known in Thurnscoe, where she formerly resided, and the bridegroom has many business and social connections in the district. His estate of Mrs Edward Smith and Sons Ltd, of West Melton, a prominent member of Wath Golf Club, and a member of Mexborough and District Rotary club.
Additional decorations by Mrs W Hardy, enhance the beauty of the little church of Saint Helen where the clothes ceremony was conducted by Reverend S Powley, Vicar of Denaby Main, assisted by the Reverend D E Hughes, Rector of Thurnscoe. The organist was Mrs T Hardwick, who played suitable nuptial music, in addition to accompanying the hymn “Lead us, Heavenly Father, lead us.”
The bride, a gracious figure in white slipper satin gown, embroidered with silver thread, was given away by her father. Her white appliqued net veil was held in place by a coronet of orange blossom, and the Jews were an opal ring (the gift of the bridegroom), and an opal pendant. She carried a shower bouquet of pink carnations.
The bridesmaids were Miss Bessie P. Smith, sister of the bridegroom, and Miss M. Jessie Kenworthy, cousin of the bride. They wore pretty dresses of green moire taffeta, and Juliet caps of silver mesh and anemones, with posies of anemones completing their toilettes.
The bridegroom’s gifts to the bridesmaids were a brooch and ring, and among the many presents received by the bride and bridegroom were cutlery from the staff of the Brick Marketing Co., Doncaster, a Barbola mirror from the Chairman and Managing Director of the Brick Marketing Co., Doncaster, and a coffee table and Pyrex dishes from the staff of Messrs Edward Smith and Sons, Ltd., West Milton.
After a family reception at the Danum Hotel, Doncaster, the bride and bridegroom left for their honeymoon, which is being spent touring in the South of England. The bride travelled in a brown tweed costume with hat and shoes to tone.
The future residence of the bride and bridegroom will be at Cross House, Wath on Dearne.
