Attempted Murder Charge

Miner Remanded

Alleged Knife Attack On Thurnscoe Girl

At Barnsley W.B. Magistrates court on Friday, Supt. H. Dunn asked for a remand in custody for one week of Cyril Norman Perry (19) miner, of Ings Lane, Little Houghton, who was arrested on Thursday and charged before an occasional court with the attempted murder of Sylvia Foster (18), canteen worker employed at Houghton Main canteen and living with her parents at 42, Kingsway, Thurnscoe. The remand was granted.

Supt. Dunn said that the attempt was made in Middlecliffe Lane, 4 Great Houghton, early on Thursday morning while the girl was on her way to work. Perry attacked her with a knife and inflicted several wounds—in her left arm, her right thigh, and two wounds in the lower part of her back. Part of the knife was left in her arm.

The girl’s wounds were of a serious nature, and she was admitted to the Beckett Hospital, Barnsley, and her condition was stated to be satisfactory. When cautioned by the police, Perry said, “I would have killed her if the knife had not broken.”

Supt. Dunn added that until recently the two had been keeping company. Perry pleaded guilty.

Mr. L. Wagstaffe for the defendant said he had no objection to a remand in custody.

Miss Foster is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs, Harry Foster, 42, Kings-way, Thurnscoe.
