For This Relief, Much Thanks

With the Cadeby explosions of 1912 ever at the back of my memory, I was reminded instantly by the “entombment” at Hickleton Main of what enters into the price of coal, and was relieved and thankful to learn after half a day of suspense that the trapped men had been reached and rescued.

One more reminder of the horrible dangers through which these hardy fellows must pass daily. Mining is still at the head of occupational dangers, even though its casualties may be lighter than those of seafaring and airfaring.

Thank God for the spirit of these men and for the constant readiness of their comrades to risk everything to come to their aid, as well as for the resource they use to keep the entrapped men in good heart during the tedious and risky process of rescue.
