In “V.C.” Submarine

Thurnscoe Man as Cook

One of the five Yorkshiremen in the crew of H.M. Submarine  ” Thrasher,” unique in the submarine service for having had two Victoria Crosses won by members of the crew, and which has just returned to her home port after 18 months of adventurous operation in the Mediterranean, during which time she has sunk over 10,000 tons of enemy shipping, is Thurnscoe man, Petty Officer Albert Morris.

P.O. Morris, who is 24, is the only son of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Morris, of 25, High Street. He has served with the ” Thrasher ” since July last year and with previous service in the “Thunderbolt ”       (formerly the Thetis) he has served a total of 15 months in submarines. His job as cook is a very important one, the morale of the crew depending a great deal on his ability to keep them well fed. He was promoted from the rank of Leading Cook after this trip.

P.O. Morris has been in the Navy five and a half years. He is married and has one child, a  girl.

Before the war he worked for the London firm of Messrs. J. Lucas, manufacturers of electrical parts. His sister, Winifred, is serving with the A.T.S.
