Seaman E. Pennington, son of Mrs. M. Fairhurst and the late Mr. Pennington, of 14, Whitworth Buildings, Thurnscoe, is serving on H.M.S. Cumberland, and it was not until the “Graf Spee” episode that his people had any idea of his whereabouts since last August.

They read how the Cumberland had relieved the Exeter. Seaman Pennington, who is 23, joined the Navy in June, 1938, and in his last letter home said he was O.K.

Before joining up he was employed at the Thurnscoe branch of Gallion’s, Ltd.
