Killed In Epic Convoy Battle

News was received on Sunday by Mr. and Mrs. Charles Rodgers, of 75, Chapel Street, Thurnscoe, that their second son, Able Seaman Robert Stuart Rodgers (20), had been killed while serving in H.M. Fearless which was sunk following an action in the: Mediterranean while on convoy duty.

Able Seaman Rodgers was born in Durham, and was an old boy of the Hill School, Thurnscoe.

Before joining the Navy in October, 1938, he was employed by the Hickleton Main Colliery as a haulage hand.

When at school Rodgers gained certificates for swimming and lifesaving. He was a very keen sportsman.
