A.T.S. Girl’s Death.
Pte. Emily Hewitt, daughter of Mrs. T. Nicholson, and the late Mr. S. Hewitt, of 52, Norman Street, has died on active service. Her mother has not yet received full details of her death.
Aged 20 she joined the A.T.S. eight months ago and was attached to a n A.A. gun crew.
She was accorded a military funeral on Wednesday, October 21st. The bier carried on a gun carriage and headed by a detachment of A.T.S., “C” Company Home Guard under the command of Captain G. Hilton, both sections of the British Legion, and women members of the Coronation Club. Soldier’ acted as bearers and provided the firing party.
The Last Post was sounded by Lieut. H. Leyland. The service was held in St. Hilda’s Church, the Rev. A. C. E. Bennett officiating, and the interment took place at Thurnscoe Cemetery.
The mourners were Mr. and Mrs. T. Nicholson. Mr. J. Hewitt, Mrs. D. Johnson. Mr. J. R. Wilkinson, Mrs. C. White, Graham, Anne, Roy and Derick Nicholson, Mr. W. White, Mr. S. Stones, Miss Betty Nicholson, Mrs. Hulme and her daughter Annie, Pte. B. Stafford, A.T.S., Mrs. Gough, Mrs. Prescott, Mrs. Millar, Mrs. Humble and a large number of neighbours and friends. The funeral arrangements were carried out by Mr. G. Bateman, 107, Houghton Road, and 58, Deighton’ by Street, Thurnscoe. Phone Goldthorpe 79.
