Eight Years Abroad

Pte. Clarence Theobold is home on leave after serving for the last 8 ½ years abroad.

The son of Mrs. D. Burton and the late Mr. J. R Theobald, of “Hopefield,” Walbert Avenue, Thurnscoe, Pte. Theobald is 31. He joined the York and Lancaster Regiment nine years ago, and served with them up to February, 1941, when he was transferred to the Pioneer Corps.

He has seen extensive foreign service, in Egypt, Palestine, India, the Sudan and Iraq, and took part in the Eighth Army’s advance from Alamein to Tunisia. He has been fortunate enough to escape being wounded, but has suffered from bomb blast. He has now been posted to home service, and is enjoying a well-earned leave.

Before enlistment he was employed at Ollerton Notts.

A brother, Pte. Robert Theobald (23), who is serving with the K.O.Y.L.I. where he has been for the last two years, joining the forces early 1940. Another brother is Gunner Leslie Theobald (22), R.A. who has been with the Forces two years, and is also serving abroad. Both brothers were employed at the Dearne Valley Colliery.
