Soldier Killed

L/cpl. William Alfred  Wilcox (31), of 51 Lidgett Lane, Thurnscoe East, and second son of Mrs. Tirrell 9, Lancaster Street, Thurnscoe   has been reported killed in action in France in June, 1940.

He was reported missing in May, 1940.

L/cpl. Wilcox served with the York and Lancs. from 1928-1936 and was in India for seven years. He had been on reserve three years and was called up at the outbreak of war.

Born at Sheffield, he was employed at Hickleton Colliery prior to joining up. He was a member of Thurnscoe Coronation Club. He would have been 32 on March 31st.

When only 14 years old L/cpl. Wilcox was awarded a life-saving certificate, and gold guard and medal and watch and match case for saving the life of a High Green boy. Colin Kirk, of Westwood Row.

His brother, Wilfred Wilcox (28) has been in Egypt for three years. He served in the York and Lancasters from 1930-38 and had only been on reserve six months when he called up.
